"Oh, Oh Shoshone"
Oh Oh Shoshone is a ready-to-be-shot screenplay on the challenges of a Wyoming Fire Watch volunteer, who has his own personal reasons for spending an entire summer in the middle of fucking nowhere.
FADE IN.

EXT. SHOSHONE NATIONAL FOREST - 1989 END OF FIRE SEASON - LATE AFTERNOON

HENRY, a firm and bearded man, late thirties, is hiking the
Two Forks area. A cave catches his eye. He enters it.

HENRY
(echoing through the cave) HELLOOO!
(sings Toto) I bless the rains down
in Aaafrica!

As Henry proceeds, he stumbles upon an area which is gated
off. He tries to kick the lock but it doesn't move one bit.
Being curious about a shut cave section in the middle of a
forest, he calls his supervisor, DELILAH.

HENRY (CONT'D)
Hey what’s behind this gate, huh?
DELILAH O/S
In Thunder Canyon? I don't know?
Rocks? It's to keep spelunkers from
dying without getting the keys from
the Service Office first. However,
they've lost ‘em so maybe its
mysteries are locked away for good.
HENRY
So,...
DELILAH O/S
So I say: you're a grown man. You
can do as you please (scoffs to
make sure she didn't mean it
wrong).
HENRY
Great! I used to go caving with
someone back in Kernville. She used
to love it.
DELILAH O/S
Be careful, big boy.

EXT. SHOSHONE NATIONAL FOREST - NIGHTFALL

Henry is making his way to his lookout tower as a dark figure
with a flashlight suddenly pops up and shines the light right
in his eyes.
HENRY
Hey there's a guy giving me the
creeps.
DELILAH O/S
Wait he's looking at you? Is he
doing anything else?
HENRY
I, I don't think so...
DELILAH O/S
Henry someone should have told you
about this area...
HENRY
What is it?
DELILAH O/S
It's outside and people come and go
as they please. It's madness.
(sarcasm)
HENRY
Oh, come on.

EXT. BEARTOOTH PASS, SHOSHONE NATIONAL FOREST - NOON

Henry is on his way to get supplies as he suddenly spots a
backpack hanging from a branch, stuck between a gap in the
rocks. Its condition makes clear that it must have been
hanging there for quite some time. Henry sighs. A hiker must
have stumbled upon something. He decides to check for more
clues. As he peeks over the edge of the cliff from which he
stands, a rock slide appears in his eye sight.
Curious about the hiker's identity, Henry reaches for the
backpack. A name appears when he zips it open. Brian Goodwin.
He reports the case to Delilah.

HENRY
Hey, ever heard about a Brian
Goodwin that got injured or lost?
DELILAH O/S
Yeah, he was the kid of the former
marine lookout, Ned, stationed in
Two Forks as well. They were hiking
as a rockslide suddenly crashed
down towards 'em. Got away in time
though. Heard the boy got to high
school last year.
HENRY
A vet, huh. Possibly realized this
wasn't a great place to keep kids.
Henry spots some blue rope hanging out of the backpack. He
grabs the bunch without hesitating.
EXT. BEARTOOTH PASS, SHOSHONE NATIONAL FOREST - AFTERNOON
Still on his way to get supplies. Henry stumbles upon a gap
between two cliffs. Realizing there's no way he can make such
a jump, he starts looking for a branch he can use to walk
over it.
DELILAH O/S
So, two weeks ago you called me in
the middle of the night. And all I
heard was you mumbling Jules. I
didn't want to wake you up. I hope
you're doing okay. I mean when it
comes to her.

Henry keeps quiet. He pretends to be busy tossing rotten logs
and branches around in search of a stable one, not hearing
what Delilah has to say.

DELILAH O/S (CONT'D)
Escaping is not always something
bad.
Then, Henry finds and picks up a rather long white branch.
HENRY
Yeah, yeah, I’m fine, this one
looks stable enough.
DELILAH O/S
(sighs)Yeah... Look. A couple
months before I took this job I was
with this guy. He was caring and
sexy as hell, a mar.. miner down in
Casper. We'd dated for almost 5 years.

He gently tries to put it down, so it wouldn't crack. His
frowning eyebrows give away his growing interest in Delilah’s
story.

DELILAH O/S (CONT'D)
I was working with the Wyoming
Outdoor Leadership School and was
obsessed with it. I wanted to be an
instructor so badly.

Henry sets his first step on the branch, kicking it a few
times. Unsatisfied with its stability, he adjusts it to
precision.

DELILAH O/S (CONT’D)
And I was sure I was going to marry
him as soon as I could be bothered.
Plus it was a good excuse to get
out of town and drink, in the
mountains, cut loose. Then...his
little brother got killed in an
..accident. He didn't come home for
5 years. "It would be easier solo",
he said to me. I was gone when he
came back.

Henry kicks it again. Satisfied with the stability, he
proceeds.

DELILAH O/S (CONT’D)
I just left his egocentric ass and
came out here. I never stopped
loving him you know. And for some
reason I wanted you to know. You're
not the only one who came here to
escape their messy life. We both
fucked up.

Henry reaches the other side and spots a set of large
mailboxes pop up behind a slight slope. "Resupply zone" is
written with faded white paint on an old board. Henry nears
his box, hoping on something else than fries and steak in
vacuum packages.
Surprisingly, a letter lays on top of his weekly menu. “Cliff
Dr., Blue Mountains, Australia”, Julia's parents' home, where
she stays at the moment. Henry glides down along his supply
box and has a seat in the long grass
He looks at the valley in front of him. The sun starts to
set, turning the sky orange and the mountains into large
shadowy entities. He starts to read.

JULIA V/O
Henry, now that writing is still
possible, I have to tell you a few
things. I am planning on staying in
Australia, permanently. You have
taken your time to clear your head
and that's what I have done as
well... I would like to ask you to
come over to Australia, after this
summer. I already filed for divorce
so there's no need for you to do it
yourself.
This clearly won't work and I don't
want to be treated by nurses every
hour of the day. I love you, Henry.
But I don't want to be a burden you
have to bear. And again, I don't
blame you. Love, Jules.

Henry keeps staring at the letter for a while. The sun is
almost entirely set behind the mountains now.

INT. TWO FORKS LOOKOUT TOWER - NIGHT
Henry opens the door of his cabin. The Fire lookout poster
next to the door waves because of the gust entering. He
smells burned wood, Looking to his left he sees a massive
forest fire. Delilah comes in.

DELILAH O/S
You've got a front row seat of what
might be the biggest fire of the
year.
HENRY
I'll call it in.
DELILAH O/S
Done already. we're probably stuck
with it for the rest of the summer.
The fire sets the night sky ablaze. An orange glow lights up
the horizon over the mountains. Henry grabs a bottle of
scotch and goes down to sit on a rock. It actually looks
beautiful
DELILAH O/S (CONT’D)
I love how they look at night.
During the day it's just smoke. But
at night. You can just... get lost
HENRY
Yeah, lookouts have to name these
right? What about Jules.
DELILAH O/S
Jules...(scoffs gently)You know, I
don't talk to the other lookouts as
much as I do to you, not in the
same way. I wish I was with you
right now, no radios. Just us.

Henry stares into the orange blazed sky, he sips from his
bottle as the fire reflects from the twinkle in his eye.

EXT. JONESY LAKE, SHOSHONE NATIONAL FOREST - MORNING

There's still a bit of morning dew lingering as Henry’s
fishing. Suddenly, after switching bait, he hears the noise
of a defect radio somewhere behind him. He leaves his rod and
walks up to it. There's a clipboard next to it on a rock. His
eyes widen with disbelief. He grabs his radio.

HENRY
What the hell! There's clipboard
with transcripts of our
conversations and a radio just
laying here on a rock?!
DELILAH O/S
No way!
HENRY
Yeah: "I don't talk to the other
lookouts as much as I do to you, at
least not in the same way."
It remains quiet for a bit as Henry’s radio falls to the
ground, hitting the rock his standing next to. Delilah’s
short breath indicates she’s startled.
DELILAH O/S
Henry??... HENRY???!!!!

EXT. JONESY LAKE, SHOSHONE - MORNING

Henry gets back up, he's al drowsy. He reaches for the back
of his head. As he pulls it back again he sees blood on his
hand. The beep in his ears make his eyes frown. As he gets
up, Delilah’s voice becomes clearer with every shout.
DELILAH O/S
God, Henry! Helloo! What happened
HENRY
I got hit to the head.
DELILAH O/S
Are you serious? By who?
HENRY
I don't know. But it's gone. The
radio and the clipboard...
DELILAH O/S
What the...
HENRY
Yeah, you mean what the hell is
Meadow Creek Station?
DELILAH O/S
Huh? I don't know.
HENRY
I saw the name Meadow Creek Station
right before I was cold cocked.
DELILAH O/S
Maybe Yellowstone Meadow, not too
far from where you are now.
HENRY
Someone is out here with a walkie
talkie, taking notes and talking to
God knows who!

EXT. MEADOW CREEK STATION, SHOSHONE NATIONAL FOREST- NOON

Henry arrives at a fenced area. There is a sign, too blurry
to read. As he proceeds, he walks past a giant radio
transmitter and some comms equipment.
A bit further he spots a tent, radio dishes and wires. He’s
nervous, even though nobody's around, he definitely wouldn't
like to get caught by these people. Things look like they’ve
just been lifted from the Space Shuttle.
Henry enters the tent and sees a hell of a lot of paperwork.
He grabs a pile of it. There're reports on every lookout in
the area, Henry feels his throat tightening. He keeps
shuffling until he finds a map which says: 'subjects:
Delilah, Henry'. His heart skips a beat.

HENRY
Are you shitting me?! An entire map
full of assessments on us.
DELILAH O/S
What does it tell?
HENRY
Well, It says you and your miner
are still together and other
personal details.
DELILAH O/S
Wait?... What other stuff? (with
unease)
HENRY
I'm going to head back. Wait for
them to move.
DELILAH O/S
Just burn the place down already!
Who knows what they're doing there
HENRY
Are you crazy! With grass this dry?
It’ll go up in seconds!

Henry takes some of the reports with him on his way out. He
hears a beeping noise coming from a closed case. Henry opens
it and takes the device with him in the spur of the moment.

EXT. SHOSHONE NATIONAL FOREST - SUNSET

Henry hikes over a hill, the site disappearing with every
move. But then an orange glaze suddenly fills the sky.
HENRY
There's fire coming from the site!
DELILAH O/S
What? I thought you weren't gonna
do it?
HENRY
I didn't, just call it in like any
other fire.
DELILAH O/S
Okay but what about the people who
started it.
HENRY
I don't know, okay. I’m getting out
of here.

EXT. TWO FORKS AREA - NIGHTFALL

On his way home, Henry hears a beeping coming from the case
he brought back. It's a tracking device. He decides to follow
it. He's a bit scared to find something he doesn't want to
find. It leads him to an abandoned backpack in some bushes
with a tracker and keys in it: Cave 428. He calls Delilah.

HENRY
I found these keys. They say cave
428. Is that the one in Thunder
Canyon?
8.
DELILAH O/S
(sighs)Yeah, how did you...
HENRY
The device from the case, it's a
tracker. Whoever lost the backpack
had a defect tracker in it.

EXT. TWO FORKS LOOKOUT TOWER - NIGHT

As Henry walks up the staircase from his tower, he finds a
portable tape player at his front door. He puts the
headphones on with suspicion. His face turns ash white.

HENRY
Delilah...Someone left a tape at my
cabin...
DELILAH O/S
Uuhm, okay, go on...
HENRY
And it sounds like we burned the
place down.
DELILAH O/S
You're kidding me. Fuck, what do we
do?
HENRY
We have to find prove of our
innocence in this whole fucking
thing.

Henry listens to the tape again. He stares at the case he
brought back and then switches to the keys. This whole summer
hasn't brought him any rest.

HENRY (CONT’D)
Me finding those keys is kinda odd,
don’t you think? Maybe there’s
something down there?
DELILAH O/S
Uhm, What’d you expect to find
then?
HENRY
Answers, Delilah, just something, I
can’t just sit here and wait.
DELILAH O/S
Okay, I’m here if you need me.

EXT. SHOSHONE NATIONAL FOREST - NOON

Henry hikes to the cave. He enters it and goes to the rusty
door. He takes a deep breath and opens the gate. As He walks
on he hears the door closing in the back. A cold shiver runs
over his spine.
HENRY
What the hell...?!
Henry goes up to the gate and tries to open it, it's stuck.
HENRY (CONT'D)
Delilah, come in. Delilah I am
trapped!

No answer. Henry decides to go deeper into the cave in hope
of finding a way out. But instead he encounters a corps
partly covered with rocks. As he gets nearer, the figure
starts to become clear. It's a kid with a rope tied around
his body. The same rope he took from the backpack he found.
Luckily, the rising sun makes a ray pop up. A way out.

EXT. TWO FORKS LOOKOUT TOWER - MORNING

Fire Jules is still raging and starting to make it's way to
the lookouts. It turns the morning sky orange.
As Henry walks down his staircase for a wee, he sees a tape
patched onto his toilet cabin and an arrow drawn with
charcoal, pointing at a steep cliff with some rope next to
it. His expression gives away annoyance, he sighs and puts
the tape in the back of his radio and listens to it as he
starts to pee.

NED GOODWIN O/S
"Hey Henry, you better find this
before it burns up. We've been
causing each other a lot of
headaches. Now I gotta go stake out
a site that's as fit for living as
the one you're about to find.
You'll get it when you see it. You
can't blame me for keeping an eye
on you. Not after bumping into you
that night down by the cave, fuck's
sake. I have been up here for three
years. Winters are hard as hell and
I ran out of books. But I got the
antenna rigged up so I could keep
track of your investigation.

Henry then zips up his pants and leans against the cabin.

NED GOODWIN O/S CONT'D)
But everything went shit-house..You
don't know anything about having
kids. It ain't Andy and Opie
walking to the lake everyday. We
were climbing. He didn't sink his
fucking anchor right. We thought
about going back but didn't see the
point. Puttin' him in the ground,
having to answer questions. Don't
come looking. I'm sorry about your
wife.

Henry takes the rope and starts to climb. Once at the top he
roams the area. It's Ned's campsite. There's antenna next to
a fallen sign. He lifts it as a hole appears in the ground.
He enters it and grabs his radio but the noise clearly states
that Delilah's line is cut off.
Henry roams the underground bunker and finds stuff from
Brian. Pictures, books and memories. On an improvised desk is
a radio and a diary of Ned's activities. Prove of his
innocence. A distress signal comes through Henry's radio.

EVAC TEAM LEADER O/S
Be advised, All lookouts make your
way to your station. A helicopter
will be there to evacuate you from
the blaze. Be there in 10.

Henry takes a deep breath and sighs as he puts the reports in
his backpack. As he closes it, a photograph of him and Julia
drops out of one of his pockets. He looks surprised as he
makes a move to pick it up, staring at it for a bit.

EXT. TWO FORKS LOOKOUT TOWER - AFTERNOON

Waiting for the chopper, Henry walks towards the cache box at
his lookout to clear his stuff out. He makes a final attempt
to call Delilah and say goodbye. No signal, he sighs with
disappointment.
Whilst taking his dirty hiking boots, henry spots a Polaroid,
wrinkled in the side of the box. He unfolds it.
Delilah is on the picture with Brian and another man giving
her a kiss, it's made at the Two Forks lookout. Frowned, he
looks up for a bit. He takes the radio and tries to call
again.

HENRY
Hey Delilah, I need to tell and ask
you something right now! your hear
me?! That Brian kid and his fa...

The line creaks and cuts off. The chopper lands near the
lookout. Henry accidentally drops the radio in the spur of
the moment. He runs up to the heli and grabs his backpack.
Making his way to take a seat he stops near the cockpit.

HENRY (CONT'D)
Excuse me, where does the flight
from Thorofare tower go, I have an
urgent message for the lookout.
PILOT
There is no flight from Thorofare
tower, sir. The station has been
abandoned for years.
Henry's face turns all white as he takes a seat.
CO-PILOT
Hey man, are you alright?

Henry nods his head. He then reaches for his backpack and
takes out the photo of him and Julia, just holding it as he’s
looking out of the window. The chopper flies past a
government advert being carried by the wind:

"Are you
Oregon's new safeguard this summer? Apply today!"

FADE OUT.
